The title of this book should have been, "I passed gas and there lay a book" as this book slowly trudges along as Steve talks about his progression into F1. I've followed F1 since '86 watched all the races, read many a magazine and many books from the sports greats, and this book was by far the worst. Several chapters are used to talk about how he got a book deal, and how he was interviewed as a mechanic by British radio which came across as rather boring. I also found it aggravating reading Steve talk about the do's and don'ts of the sports rules as he comes across as a nerdy engineer. His insight on the Benetton team was largely a biased 'we were right, they are wrong' scenario. I couldn't wait to finish the book so I could toss it aside and ended up skipping many of the last pages. Rating: 3 / 5

I would have preferred more about the nuts and bolts of F1 and less about the author's career. The book seems to be targeted at serious F1 fans who want every scrap of information possible on the sport - not readers like me. Rating: 3 / 5

If you follow Formula One on Speed then you know Steve Matchett; he manages to convey his usual great analysis into print and offers many insights into what the life of an F1 mechanic is like. Excellent book, wish it had been twice as long! Rating: 5 / 5

Great book about Steve Matchett's early years as a mechanic, how he got his start in F1, and his successful career working with names like Schumacher, Brawn, and Mansell. Easy, fun read for any F1 fan. Steve Matchett seems like the kind of guy I'd like to drink a beer with. Rating: 4 / 5

Very absorbing book and well written. For the Formula 1 fan very insightful into the activities in the pits. Rating: 4 / 5
