I’m nearly 16 years old and english, and so is my long-term boyfriend (almost 17 years old), but he’s in a youth american football team (Tamworth Phoenix Youth), and he’s got a game coming up.
It’s an away game, and he’s invited me along.
He plays as a quarterback.
Could anyone explain to me the basics of american football so I know whats going on when he’s playing, and what a quarterback has to do?

I am wondering why both Americans and Europeans lay claim to the word "football"- and for different games! (Not to mention, American football has a lot less to do with feet than European football).

I wanna know at least the good players though.. like.. if you could give player parallelisms, who would be american football's Lebron James (young forward who's an unstoppable freak of nature), Kobe Bryant (guard who seems he can do it all), Shaquille O'neal (BIG guy; nothing but power), and Michael Jordan (legendary)?
